Still Reading

Two really different books here. My sister and I read Everlost out loud on our road trip, something that my family used to do on almost every long road trip we took.* We had been trying hard to find something at the bookstore that we could read on the trip and were at a loss, and then we came home to my apartment and found that my friend Peter had dropped this book off as a going away gift. Problem solved! It was a perfect road trip read. And, although I'm 99% certain that he doesn't read this blog, many thanks to Peter for the forced recommendation.

The other book is a collection of novellas by Gabriel García Márquez, also a gift, this time from my brother. I loved, loved, loved this book, but it was much harder to review because writing a synopsis of anything by Gabriel García Márquez is well nigh impossible, and writing synopses of three novellas as triply impossible. But if you've ever read and loved 100 Years of Solitude, then I high recommend delving into more. And if you haven't read 100 Years of Solitude, please do.

My transition may have kept me busy, but it also allowed me a surprising amount of reading time, so hopefully there will be more reviews to come. You know, for those of you who like that sort of thing.

* By which I mean that we read books aloud, not that we read Everlost on every trip. That would have gotten boring. (And would have been an impressive feat given the 2006 copyright date.)

Oh, those family book readings during long drives--such happy memories! The fantasy book sounds like it would have been perfect!

Do you remember the drive when you kids got a little tired of the children's novel we'd been reading, so I put it away for while? I had just started reading my own book to myself--a "little English gentleman solves mysteries" kind of book and dad asked me to read it aloud to him. We quietly read for quite a while and then stopped at a rest stop. Weren't dad and I shocked when, from the back of the van, 4 little voices began to debate who dunnit? We had no idea anyone could even hear us read, let alone that you guys wanted to hear. So we finished the rest of that book together. Just one of the many happy memories of our family reading.

I read Are You There,God? It's Me, Margaret to Eric during part of our trip a couple of weeks ago. I think he really liked it. :)
