I forgot how good Utah peaches are.

I've been wanting to blog, but struggling a little to think about something blog-worthy to write. So, in order to keep my blog active (and, as usual, to direct interested readers toward my book blog), I have a few random non-peach-related thoughts* from the past two weeks.

First, it's hard to suddenly have a routine when I've been a graduate student for 7 years. I have had such a flexible schedule (even when I was most busy) that I find myself rebelling just a little bit when it comes to doing the same thing every day. It's strange not to be able to, you know, make a run to the grocery store in the middle of the day, or to go home for lunch and then curl up on my couch to do my work. But it's also kind of nice to come home and be home, and not worry about working through the evening.

Second, Jin loves corn cobs. I discovered this when he finally got into the trash for the first time at our new place (I had been avoiding bringing out the balloons, but they're back now). Apparently it was the corn cobs that he couldn't resist. I fed him another one a little later and watched in amusement as he scarfed it down.

Third, you should not feed dogs corn cobs. I discovered this not (thank goodness) because Jin suffered any adverse reactions (this is the dog who can down a bag of Reese's peanut butter cups, wrappers and all, without getting sick), but because I looked on the internet post-facto to see if it's okay for dogs to eat corn cobs. It's not. They could die. It made me feel really awful that I had fed him one on purpose and laughed while he ate it.

Fourth, a memory from when I was a kid. I may have shared it before. I had gone to the bookstore with my dad, and as I perused the adult shelves I remember thinking that I wasn't sure I wanted to grow up because then I would have to read grownup books. I didn't want to. They looked so boring compared to kids' books! I thought about this experience while I was writing my most recent book reviews over on the book blog, because one was for a kids' book (well, a YA book), and the other was for the most boring of boring adult books that I have ever read. Except that this was my second read and I ended up loving it more than the kids' book. Funny how perspective changes.

Fifth, I think I should make this an even five, but I can't think of another random thought. But I'll end on a nice up note. Work is good right now, and classes are going well, and life isn't too shabby. As much as I missed Michigan (and I still do!), I'm feeling good about where I'm at for the moment.

* But Utah peaches! So good!

That is so funny about the corn cobs. Well... it's funny because Jin didn't die. ;)
