Although I have mixed feelings about life in L.A. (being near family versus crowds versus great weather versus traffic versus lots to do versus cost of living...), one of the definite advantages is that there's an awful lot to do and see and explore within a fairly small radius. With a long weekend ahead of us this week, it wasn't all that hard to just book a motel over night, drive a couple hours, and spend two days in San Diego.
Neither of us had been to San Diego, at least in a vacationy sense, since childhood, and so it was a fun, new, explorey experience. We made sure we had a list of plenty of things we could do, without overstructuring our itinerary, and we had a great time.

We saw the San Diego temple off the freeway and decided to stop for a moment. The grounds were closed for the holiday, but we snapped a picture from the parking lot. |

Our first stop was Old Town San Diego, where there were various 4th of July festivities. We got pressured into participating in an egg toss. We lost when the egg cracked as it hit my hands a few rounds in, but we got this great action shot from a spectator we'd asked to shoot pictures for us. |

Fireworks on Coronado Island - we arrived less than an hour before the show and had to park 10 blocks from the viewing area, but we're glad we went. |

Miles was not sure he was glad we went. (Actually, he did really well - he mostly just slept.) |

When we checked into our hotel we were told that our room had an ocean view. If you look really, really, really hard you can sort of kind of see the ocean way in the distance, over the top of the trailer park. |

The "continental breakfast." There was also a pot of coffee. |

The motel's only fitness equipment. That sign taped to it reads: "Do Not Touch - Dangerous." Yeah, the motel was pretty seedy (this isn't the half of it). But it was cheap. |

At the San Diego Zoo. This is my favorite "Miles in a Face Hole" shot yet. |

Miles' second petting zoo. And he's not even three months. I hate to say it, San Diego Zoo, but the Scipio gas station petting zoo is way better. |

Sounds like a great time! So glad you went!
Everyone should have at least one memorable stay in a seedy motel. We'd had two: Tucumcari, New Mexico and Schaumberg, Illinois. Great stories both!
What a fun get-away! The pictures of you and Brian with Miles are priceless. They will be fun to show him when he's older.
We've had a number of seedy accomodation experiences over the years and around the world. I'm not sure Brian would remember the one in Espanola, New Mexico.
Adorable! I love it! :)
Loving all these posts, keep them comin'!
