Yesterday when I left my house to go to dinner at my sister's, several of my neighbors were congregating in the front yard of the house next door. One of them waved to me and said hi, and then said, "I'm sorry I didn't leave a note with that ham I left for your dog! I meant to call you and let you know, but the time got away from me."
A-ha!
I think if I were to have pegged any one of my neighbors to think of leaving a ham bone at my door for my dog, it would have been her. Not because she's strange (she's not) but because she's just really nice like that.
Which makes it all feel a little anticlimactic. The story was more fun when it was just a little bizarre than when the solution to the puzzle turned out to be the most obvious and mundane of solutions. I still say that an unsolved mystery is generally more interesting when left unsolved.
(Mystery or no mystery, my dog did enjoy the ham.)

You do have the nicest neighbors!
