Happy perspective

Today surprised me by being beautiful and spring-like. I wore my lightest coat to campus, but shed it before I got out of my car. And when I made the cross-campus walk to turn in an exam at the testing center, all I wanted to do was stay outside and bask in the 46-degree sunshine and maybe write love poems to the Utah weather.

When I moved to Michigan, people who knew me well knew how much I dreaded the change in climate. It almost convinced me not to move in the first place. So I told lots of people that the reason I chose Michigan was so that wherever I went next would feel warm. I didn't think the scheme would really work, however. I hate being cold. But then I moved back, and it did. Work, I mean. The feeling-warm-in-cold(ish)-climates scheme. Once upon a time I thought Utah winters were horrible. Once upon a time I thought Michigan winters were not that much more horrible than Utah winters. Now I would like to revisit and revise both of those beliefs, because Utah may get colder than California, but it has so very few days where the high fails to reach above freezing. And Utah may have snow, but the snow almost always melts before it falls again. And more importantly than anything else, Utah has sunshine. Almost every single day. Oh yeah, and no wind (if you avoid the canyons).

And today when I clicked on the weather forecast, I was shocked to see that this beautify spring weather is actually a good five degrees colder than the average! I know that if I stick around for a couple years my amazement at just how endurable the winters are will start to fade, but for now I'm loving it.

Maybe I should try this periodic immersion in things I hate with other areas of my life than cold weather. Like I could hire myself out as a bathroom cleaner for a summer to appreciate how easy it is to clean my own bathroom once a week (or two...ish...). Or take a nap on Jin's seat cover in the back seat of my car (shudder) to appreciate the relative lack of dog hair on my living room couch. Or consume nothing but raisins for Lent in order to, I don't know, appreciate chocolate more? Hmm.

Utah winters are NOTHING compared to Michigan winters. Although, this winter has been colder and snowier than last winter. Still sunny and manageable.
