This one's for Valentine's Day, I guess.

This is a question I wrote for the test my students took tonight.

Your arch-enemy Malevolent Max delivered a box of chocolates to your doorstep and you ate one before you realized who they came from. Fortunately, Malevolent Max is still perfecting his poisoning techniques. Here is what you know:

  • Only 2/5 of Max's chocolates are actually poisonous.
  • Of the poisonous chocolates, 3/10 are fatal and the rest will only make you lose your superpowers for a few days.
  • Since Malevolent Max is simply a bad cook, 1/3 of the nonpoisonous chocolates will still make you very, very sick. But they won't kill you.

What is the probability that the chocolate you ate will be fatal? What is the probability that the chocolate you ate will not harm you at all?

This is why I like teaching.

I think out of a box of 25. 3 will kill you, 7 will make you lose your powers, 5 will make you sick and 10 will do nothing to you. I made a little picture..that I can't show you here. Am I right? Either way, that's an awesome problem!

Wow, a test that tests you and entertains you at the same time! You are a great teacher!
