30 Comment Challenge

The big day has arrived. Right now at 7:45 in the morning, I am realizing I have two options: 1) Plan to spend my 30th birthday doing work and then feel frustrated when things keep coming up and interrupting my carefully laid work plans, or 2) Give up altogether and just enjoy my birthday without any obligations. As un-fun as it sounds, I'm still leaning toward option 1. After all, I do have to apply for funding, find a job for next year, teach a class, and write a dissertation. But I've also reduced the amount of work I anticipate being able to do today in proportion to the number of interruptions I am expecting to get in my way. And of course I will make time for some free birthday stuff from the various Ann Arbor establishments that give away free birthday stuff.

In the meantime, if I'm going to set a challenge for myself of accumulating 30 comments on this blog entry (do I even have 30 people who read my blog on a regular basis?), I had better give you something interesting to comment about besides, of course, wishing me happy birthday. And so I have a request. I have a couple gift certificates for Amazon and iTunes (thanks Sean and Mom and Dad!) and I though it might be fun to let other people help me spend them this time. Plus, as exciting as my 30th birthday is, there might come a moment in the next day or two when I need a boost. So what I'd like to ask is that you tell me a song (name and artist) that makes you happy, or that you just think is an all-around great song, and then I'm going to make a playlist of those songs. If I manage to get my 30 comments, I'll post the playlist here on my blog (ooh, incentive!).

Rules:
  1. Multiple recommendations are encouraged. I mean, don't get too carried away, but if you want to give me 2 or 3 or 4 songs instead of just one, I'm not going to complain.
  2. You don't have to think about what I'd like when you make your recommendation - my birthday is about me, but this challenge is about you. I want to know what music you like. I've already decided that no matter how cheesy or weird the song is, I will like it by virtue of the fact that it was recommended to me. I won't judge you. Because then you might judge me for the music I like.
  3. You may comment more than once, but they've got to be legitimate comments. I want 30 comments, not necessarily 30 commenters, but I also don't want 30 comments from one person trying to help me reach my goal.
  4. You can comment if you don't know me. I don't know why anyone who doesn't know me would read my blog, but just in case you're out there, don't let it stop you.
  5. You may wish me happy birthday when you leave your comment, but you're not required to do so.

Don't worry - I won't be devastated if I don't make my 30 comment goal because it's so far above anything I've ever gotten. But I'm curious to see if I can do it. Well, if you can do it :).

"First comment?" She asks hopefully.

I enjoy Ingrid Michaelson's "Be Ok." Not the most elaborate of lyrical discourses but an artistic audio representation of a sweet idea. Vienna Teng's "Italian Greyhound" has a ton of energy behind it. I also like her "3Br/1Ba." And, Jonatha Brooke's "Linger" has always been a favorite of mine (she is the best songwriter I've ever come across).

Oops, that was four songs. Happy birthday Amy :)

anything from The

Happy Birthday, my fellow part-time instructor friend, boggle-friend, organ/piano-friend, and friend. We have way too much in common.

I'm not sure why I like it, but I have recently really liked the song "Lions" by The Features. I don't really know anything about the rest of the album, but that song makes me happy.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday!

I like the song "Sway" by The Perishers. But I don't know if it's really a "feel good song"

I also really like music in Spanish... Go Figure. So I'm going to recommend "Fotografia" por Juanes.

Well, thinking of what I listen to when I ride my bike...The Beast by Milt Buckner makes me laugh; I love Chances by Five for Fighting, really pretty; Blueboy by John Fogerty gets me rockin' up the hills; etc. etc.

Happy Birthday!!! Have a very wonderful, happy day! We love you!

Happy Birthday! I like the rendition of Gabriel's Oboe by Jenny Oaks Baker, Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson, Layla by Eric Clapton, If I had $1,000,000 by the Barenaked Ladies always puts me in a good mood. Another song I like from Jenny Oaks Baker is the medley from the movie Far and Away. I hope you have a great day!!

Happy Birthday, Amy! I just downloaded several songs on iTunes a few minutes ago! Most were by Jamie Cullum ("Photograph," "All At Sea," "Give Me the Simple Life," "Where Is Your Heart At?" and his cover of "Please Don't Stop the Music." I also recently downloaded "Haven't Met You Yet" by Michael Buble and "Summertime" by Kenny Chesney. I recommend them all!

Another Song that invariably makes me happy: Wake the Sun by The Matches

Recently I've been adding "guilty pleasure"-type stuff to my iPod and I simply cannot get enough of the Bee Gees' "You Should Be Dancing." Also "Kiss" by Prince. Add "Debra" by Beck and you've got a trio of killer falsetto jams.

As for more straightforward indie fare, check out "Lazarus" by Porcupine Tree. My friend John recommended it to me and I love it.

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday! I'm going to recommend Hey Soul Sister by Train. It's mostly just a catchy tune, but it makes me smile every time I hear it.

From Abominable Snowman using his main squeeze's account (forgot my password): :-)

I'll suggest Under the Milky Way by The Church and Who'll Stop the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Amy, this is a great birthday! Life starts at 30, believe me. We are so proud to claim you as our daughter. Our lives have been far better because of you. We love you very much! Have a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

A really sweet birthday song is "Backwards Down the Number Line" by Phish. Plus it has a mathy-sounding title.

"Happy, happy, oh my friend."

Happy Birthday Amy!
Lately The Beatles have made me happy, so I'm gonna suggest "Here Comes the Sun" because it's a happy little tune, and it'll give you warm thoughts too.

Happy Birthday Amy!

A song that always made me feel happy was 'She's Electric' by Oasis. Though I'm not sure when I was 15 I really understood the lyrics, so it may not be that appropriate. :)

Happy Birthday!! I hope it has been an amazing day so far! You are almost to the goal of thirty:)

A song I love... hmm well, disney always puts me in a great mood... basically any song from the Little Mermaid will do! Go on and Kiss the Girl or Part of Your World... always great belting out loud songs when nobody is watching!
Hercules is also usually a good one... I can Go the Distance.

Then there is also Hairspray sound track! Fun upbeat and again great belting out loud while nobody is looking music. That it was what I love:)

Happy birthday! I don't know you, but I just clicked over haha. I haven't listened to anything special lately, or I'd give you a recommendation.

When I'm feeling down, Enrique Iglesias is fun - a guilty pleasure. Something like Escape is a fun one. :) Songs by Flight of the Conchords are great too (Hurt Feelings, Cheer up Murray).

Happy Birthday!

Here's another, it's totally upbeat and happy.
"Sabor featuring Tempo" by Quantic

How about "Every day should be a Holiday" by The Dandy Warhols. I don't like it as much as "we used to be friends" but I'm not sure if it fulfills the requirements or is what you're looking for on your bday... so play that one in a week or something.

How about Uncle Kracker's new song "Smile?" I love it--it's so happy and upbeat--perfect for today!

Happy Birthday! What's Left of Me by Nick Lachey and you know why. I expect you to sing it at the top of your lungs!

This one is really random, but I really dig Annie, Use Your Telescope by Jack's Mannequin. It's one that I have to sing along with if it comes on. Also, Go On, Say It by Blind Pilot makes my day.

Happy Birthday

"Zip City" by Drive-by Truckers. Yes.

And a merry birthday to you.

Also, "Grouch Anthem," by Oscar the Grouch. I really love that song.

I'm also going to suggest "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When you Smile)" by Van Morrison. And D.A.N.C.E. by Justice.

Abominable here again:

My favorite country western by Garth Brooks, Rodeo. Check it out.

By the way, you should have seen the snow on the mountains above us this morning. Probably down to 3000 feet. Nobody thinks of snow capped peaks in Los Angeles, but they are beautiful. Happy birthday!
Love, Dad

I don't know you but I linked over from the Board page.

Anyway I don't think anyone can keep from smiling when they listen to Dreaming Of You by The Coral.

Did you need 30 songs or 30 comments? Did you get something from Zingerman's today? I'm sad I won't have another birthday in Ann Arbor, but hopeful to celebrate it with a classroom of my very own. I hope you had a great day.

nhodge said...

well, we've exceeded your expectations! the song bringing a smile to my face these days is First Time by Lifehouse. can't explain it. also, i'm loving Dreams by the Cranberries (really anything by the cranberries is good), You're my Best Friend by Queen, Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas, and Journey (the good stuff, not the power ballads).

hope you're 30th was everything you dreamed it'd be! :)

Happy birthday! And I'm happy to see you've made your goal! (o:

The happiest song ever is Man of la Mancha sung by Linda Eder. If there was one song I had to listen to for the rest of eternity, it would probably be that one.

Happy birthday, Amy. Saint Simon by the Shins makes me smile. It reminds me of the year I lived in the Bay Area, which was, ironically, a pretty awful year! But the song made me happy then and still does now!

Catherine said...

You got so many comments! Yay!

I wanted to post my favorite running songs. I don't know if you should add them to your playlist...I don't think I'd listen to them out of the running context. But they make me happy. :)

And happy birthday again!

Am I Sexy? (Austin Powers soundtrack)
Girlfriend (Avril Lavigne)*
Bullets (Bob Schneider)
Survivor (Destiny's Child)
2 Much Booty (Soundmater T)**

*Eric said it's okay to list songs that might have swear words.
**Because it was amazing on So You Think You Can Dance.

*Because Eric did it too.

So I am super lame because I never read blog posts on the day they are posted. Something to do with that whole crashed computer thing...

Anyway!

Music I like lately:

Pale Blue Eyes by The Velvet Underground

Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop by Landon Pigg

Lucky by Jason Mraz

And I LOVE Brandi Carlile, she is my all time any time calm down and feel peaceful music, anything she does is good.

Maybe kind of mainstream? But I like them...

Hope your bday was great!
