On Tuesday night, I sat in my apartment working on my dissertation proposal, with my dog curled up at my feet and my laundry thumping in the background.
And if you read that sentence and realized that "thumping in the background" is not a phrase normally associated with laundry, well, you are one step ahead of where I was Tuesday night.
Goodbye, cell phone.
The funny thing is this:
I had decided to take advantage of being in for the night to wash two coats - my winter coat and the one I wear to the gym. Just as I was taking them to the washing machine, I remembered that my iPod shuffle (the new one I bought with my Christmas money to replace the shuffle I accidentally sent through the wash) was in the pocket of my gym coat. I was a little shaken by just how close I'd come to repeating that disaster, but proud of myself for averting it.
You'd think that would have inspired me to check the pockets of my other coat.
(Incidentally, I was prescient enough to hold onto my old cell phone back when I got my new one, so I just had that one reactivated. That is, I am still perfectly reachable by phone. It's just an old, boring, gray phone just like the one everyone else has instead of a cool, sleek, new red phone that no one I know owns. But I'm the only one who will know the difference when you call me.)

Oh my...
Well, you and dad still have the same cell phones again (and it wasn't his fault this time). ;-)
I just sent my List Of Things To Do through the wash! I realize that's not as valuable as your phone, and it came out still mostly legible (except for the reminder to "update Mpsfluyer" which got folded over AND washed....), but I can empathize. Sort of.
Maybe all your technology woes is a sign that you should join an Amish community.
