After writing organ with intentional conspicuousness in the Skills and Talents section of my new member info sheet, and mentioning casually to my roommate (who has at least a little clout in the ward organization) that I actually enjoy music callings, I really wasn’t all that surprised when I met with the second counselor in the bishopric and was extended a calling. I felt like I had set the gears in motion the moment I entered the ward and it was only a matter of time.
Since callings are supposed to be inspired of the Lord at some level, I almost feel like this is cheating.
It’s justifiable, of course. Not many people can play the organ nowadays, and especially not in a singles ward out in the “Mission Field.” And so if I’m both able and willing it’s practically my duty to make that known.
Still, it does sort of take away the surprise.

I don't think it's cheating so much as helping the Lord's servants have access to information that could help them be inspired more easily. : ) I've no problem with the pick-your-own-calling policy, as long it isn't going on all the time. While we all need the chance to grow and do something new or difficult (or mundane, for that matter), it's nice to be able to use the skill sets we already have to contribute in a meaningful way.
Enjoy your organ-playing. : )
That's how I feel with my calling. He tried really hard to find somebody but me with the capabilities to choose hymns and conduct them, but we didn't even have anyone who could do that much.*sigh* Oh, as a side note, I was told to limit the number of unknown hymns to one a week instead of 2-3. Whoops.
Doesn't it say something somewhere about how the Lord loves a cheerful giver? I don't know how this could more qualify.
